Note to self: when two outdoor photographers go on a ski tour together, it’s wise to allow plenty of extra time. We stopped countless times to take photos and carried both our full photography equipment and complete ski touring gear to stay as flexible and creative as possible. Our route was straightforward: starting in the Kühtai valley, ascending the Zwieselbacher Rosskogel (around 1,342 meters of elevation) and descending to the Pforzheimer Hütte, a traditional mountain hut, where we spent the night. On day two, the plan was to climb the Gleirscher Fernerkogel before skiing back into the valley.
Conditions were far from easy. The light was flat, making it difficult to read the terrain and to capture striking compositions. Still, when the mountain forecast briefly delivered breaks in the clouds, or when natural objects created depth, interesting images became possible. This ski touring in Austria trip turned into valuable practice and left us with memorable photos of a true alpine adventure.
